Arsenal legend Ian Wright believes that Bruno Fernandes appeared puzzled by Erik ten Hag’s tactical decisions during the loss to Brighton.
Manchester United failed to capitalize on their opening win against Fulham last weekend, suffering a disappointing 1-2 defeat to Brighton. Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for the hosts, but Amad Diallo equalized for United. The visitors had a goal disallowed by VAR before Joao Pedro scored the decisive goal in stoppage time.

Ian Wright, the former Arsenal striker, expressed confusion over many aspects of United’s performance, particularly Ten Hag’s decision to substitute captain Bruno Fernandes in the 79th minute with Scott McTominay. Matthijs de Ligt also came on at the same time for Harry Maguire. Wright was baffled by Ten Hag’s decision to remove Fernandes and noted that even Fernandes seemed confused. He said:
“There were many things in that game that I couldn’t understand. I don’t get why Ten Hag took Bruno off. Why did he take him out? Fernandes left the pitch and seemed puzzled. It looked like, ‘What is going on?’ I couldn’t believe he was taken off. If there is anyone who could help you win, it’s Bruno Fernandes.”
Manchester United’s next opponent in the Premier League is Liverpool, who have collected 6 points from their opening two games, defeating Ipswich Town and Brentford before heading to Old Trafford.
